HUGH SISUNG died January 28, 2002. Age 71 of Gibraltar. Beloved husband of Elaine. Loving father of James, Katherine, Karen, Linda, Thomas and Peter. Also survived by 10 grandchildren. In 1983 a small group of Nordic ski enthusiasts who did most of their training at Maybury State park in Northville Michigan decided to form their own ski team. Although we had less than 20 skiers every individual had a passion for skiing and sense of community as a group. What we lacked in size we made up for in enthusiasm, team spirit, determination, effort and ability. After making our mark in the 1983 ski season, placing 6 men in the top ten of Michigan Cup including 3 women in the Women’s top ten, Maybury Nordic become a recognized force at every race. In 1984 Maybury Nordic won the Michigan Cup including a dominating finish in the Vasa Race with 4 of skiers finishing in top 5 overall. As a team we partied together, trained together, had team jackets, custom racing suits, and even license plates with the Maybury logo. Our black and silver suits had the look of an Oakland Raiders football team and our over confident personality was equally as intimidating. As with any close team there is always a person who is the common thread that links all our personalities together. Hugh Sisung was that guy for Maybury. As a master skier Hugh was not only a winner in his age class but also a bigger winner in the hearts of his teammates. With so many strong personalities on the team, Hugh was able to bring out the best in all of us. Maybe it was his experience as a teacher for many years, or the loving care he had in raising a family, but Hugh always managed a way to keeps us focused on the people side of our sport first. When I hear people say that they love this sport because the people are so friendly I can’t help but think that Hugh Sisung was a person who exemplified what cross country skiing is all about. As we complain about the lack of snow and mild temperatures everywhere it brings me comfort to know that right now Hugh’s spirit is skiing on a cloud of snow, sunny sky’s, with extra blue wax conditions and of course his black and silver ski suit for the Maybury Nordic racing team.
