The 10th annual
Junior "Muffin Race" was held here today under less than ideal conditions. At the
start the temperature was 4 degrees above zero with snow and gusty winds. Seventy-four skiers
answered the starter's call to go to the line in 4 different age categories for both boys and
girls.

Glen Lake's Cassidy Edwards won the Junior Olympics Cross
Country Skiing 2003 National Championships classic race on Wednesday, as part of the event being
held March 10-15 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Traverse City's Coulter
twin sisters placed second and third in the 10km race, and the girls relay was a heartbreaker...

The Traverse City Trojan & Titan Combined Nordic Ski Team
came back on the second day of the State Championship Ski event in Walloon Lake, MI to defend
the State title. The Traverse City Gold Team was led by Anna Coulter, who won the girls Classic
race on Saturday, and by Cameron Ross who came in 2 seconds behind Jared Craig of Marquette on
Saturday.

The Copper Country girls team placed first and the
boys placed second at the Michigan State High School Cross-Country Ski Championships over the
weekend. Combined, the Copper Country teams placed second, by just eight points out of 241, to
Traverse City.

The 2003 Michigan High School Championships held at the Boyne Valley Lodge in Walloon Lake.
The format was a pursuit with the Classic leg held on Saturday, 2/15 and the Freestyle leg held
on Sunday, 2/16. The skiers were treated to sunny skies, cold temps and hard tracks.

547 skiers braved 0 degrees and 20-30 mph winds in the coldest
and slowest Great Bear Chase last Sunday. The suffered from frostbite to cold toes, but had a
huge pile of pastries and pasties waiting for them at the high school.

Cup Skiers Dominate Hiawatha Invitational

It was a good weekend for Michigan Cup skiers who choose to race in the 47th
Annual Hiawatha Invitational in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Of the 14 age groups with Michigan
Cup skiers racing in Saturday's classic events, a full half of the winners came from south of
the border. Sunday was even better, when an additional contingent - fresh from the Hanson
Hills 20K Freestyle - drove north. With the added presence, MI Cup skiers captured 12 of the
15 age group wins in which they participated.
