Bucks Run will be open today (12:00-8:00) This will be most likly the last day for a while to ski.

Mon, Jan 30: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
Beautiful ski under a bright moon and stars. Groomed golf course was in very good shape, used medium good skis,no issues. Buck Run was fine but it was nice to stretch out on the GC for a change. Let's all pray the forecast doesn't come true...

Mon, Jan 30: Burchfield Park (Lansing)
Not much to add to Linda's report today except to say that it was still skiable in the late afternoon. I kept on my heels while skating and never bottomed out enough to stop my forward momentum. If the hourly forecast is to be believed, then I bet you could still get a nice ski in first thing tomorrow morning. I fear that by the time I get out of work, it will be too late.

Mon, Jan 30: Independance Oaks (Clarkston)
Called Independence oaks, they have rolled their trails.

Mon, Jan 30: Burchfield (Lansing)
Snow was about 3-4 inches but deeper in the open areas. I skated the whole system, not groomed but skiable. I bottomed out a number of times and must admit technique suffers when you are looking down for what to avoid, but hey, so much better than not skiing. You still cannot ski the river sections as the water was actually moving in the trail. That is really high for Jan! Did talk to Gary and they are going to groom if we ever get any snow, they just gave up on the hikers.
This is still rock skis, the ones I use most of the time! The northern skiers have no idea how little snow we will tolerate just to get out on trails and even less if golf courses. Yesterday I skied back and forth in the open area of Francis park just to get some time in! It was fun, all in the mind!l

Mon, Jan 30: brighton ()
Buck's Run groomed this a.m. ski center open today, 12-8 pm. New snow yesterday added to cover on trail.

Sun, Jan 29: Burchfield Park (Lansing)
There was enough snow today for some decent skiing. Use your rock skis, of course. The trails are not groomed, but enough skiers had gone through to create an okay track in parts. I skated the whole loop and only caught dirt once or twice. It wasn't super fast, but it was smooth enough and not too deep. It should be okay tomorrow at least until the rain hits. I'm hoping the rain holds off until after I get out of work so I can get one more ski in before it all melts.

     - Alec Drachman
Sun, Jan 29: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
Skied 2 hours with Doug Heady. The .4k loop is fast and fun. We changed directions every 30 minutes to keep it fresh. We used rock skis, but there were only occasional sticks on the mostly man-made snow.

     - Douglas Cornell
Sat, Jan 28: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
I'll add to Tony's comments: you can use your good skating skis! And the trail is out of the wind! (Recommend going clockwise so the wind is at your back on the one open area).

Only skiable snow around!

     - Mike Muha
Sat, Jan 28: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
Skate skied the 0.4 kilometer loop with Doug Heady and Mike Muha this morning. The loop had a base of hard packed man made snow with good coverage and the additional inch of new natural snow made skiing very enjoyeable. Hard to believe it was pouring rain a short time ago. Once again the crew at Huron Meadows worked their magic so we could spend time on snow.....thanks Bill and Adam!

     - Tony Percha
Fri, Jan 27: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
Nice ski tonight on the man made snow. The loop is a hair under .4K.
It has a track and one skating lane. At 6:00 tonight it was very firm.
One small water hazard to avoid, other than that, pretty nice. You could use your good skis. Picnic tables are set up by the trail head to use for changing into your ski boots.

Fri, Jan 27: brighton ()
Bucks Run set for skate and classic. Soft conditions and warm.

     -
Tue, Jan 24: Huron Meadows (Bucks Run) (brighton)
We still have snow piled up and will rebuild for Thursday or Friday depending on the forecast Thursday. Looks like the trail will be about .5km with classic and skate.
The trail will get longer if we can ever get an extended cold spell, this winter sucks

     - Adam Haberkorn
Sun, Jan 22: Pine Haven (Sanford)
Good conditions at Pine Haven, no bare spots and nicely skiied in tracks despite only having 4-5" on the ground. Hills were very smooth, lots of fun! Hoping it survives the warmup this week, but seems unlikely.

     - Eich and Aug
Sun, Jan 22: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)
Good skiing on Buck's run - the trail with snowmaking. Decent tracks. ($5 fee for skiing on the man-made snow to help the park recover expenses - it's worth it). Also skied Coyote Run (the north golf course trail).
OK for skating-just had to be careful crossing the golf cart paths. The trail got rocky in a new section at the east end of the trail in the woods.

Michigan: Southwest Lower Peninsula

Sun, Jan 29: Milham Park Golf Course (Kalamazoo)
All trails at Milham were rolled yesterday and again this morning. Skiers will find conditions varying between good and bad. Where we still had an icy base I was able to get the new snow to stick and conditions are good. Other parts of the trail lost all of its base and the ground warmed up. In these places the snow is not really adhering well and skiers will find poor to bad conditions. The ground is to warm and the snow to thin to set tracks at this time. Overall classic skiers will find better conditions than skaters despite no tracks being set. I would also like to thank my quality control assistant Violet (age 4), who rode the snowmobile with me today. Her help was greatly appreciated. Kalamazoonordic.com

Tue, Jan 24: Love Creek (Berrien Springs)
After yesterday's rain, Love Creek varied from okay to just awful. About two thirds of the trail is skiable. If I go back tomorrow, I will just go back and forth on the good parts. Rock skis recommended.
Glad I had the garage sale Fischer Crowns. Really nice skis, to tell the truth.

Ski Report Saturday Feb 4, 2012

Had a surprising number of skiers yesterday all of whom had good things to say about the trail conditions. The skating lanes turned out in fine form and we were able to set tracks on the Trappers Cabin, Wild Turkey, Rolling Hills and Mackinac Cut Trails.

As of 6:30am the temperature was 17 degrees. Groomer Rodney will start Ginzu tenderizing the above trails plus the Adventure trail at 7:15am this morning. By 9am the skating lanes will be fast and fun. Rodney will set fresh tracks where needed as the temps warm.

Thanks to three strong men and and a big tractor loader we were able to cover the icy trailhead yesterday with approx 35 tons of stockpiled snow!

Fri, Feb 3: Timber Ridge (Traverse City)
Great shape and will be a wonderful venue for the Michigan Cup Sprints on Sunday. Race skis are fine. There are no bare spots and the grooming was fast, firm, and your skis would bite into the snow for a good strong push. Gordon has blown fresh snow onto the course for the last 3 days and groomed. Thanks you Gordon. There is good snow to ski on this weekend in Northern Mich. Hanson Hills was fine today as well for skating.

Regards, Curt Peterson

Fri, Feb 3: Boyne Mountain (Boyne Falls)
Skied the Vistas Trail after work to see how it was holding up. Since the temps hit 42 today, I decided to use my waxless crowns. The trail conditions were pretty good. Out in the groomed skate lane there was about an inch of soft corn snow on top of a firm and level base. Classic tracks were on both sides of the skate lane. Get out while you can, looks like another week of above zero temps.

Fri, Feb 3: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
The 25K VASA loop provided a real fast fun cruise this morning. My first time around the 25K loop since Wednesday morning. Though I havent seen a Groomers report for the past couple of days it sure seemed to have been Ginzu-groomed in the past couple of days as I was skating today on what appeared to be a freshened up trail at least until the turn-off to the Special K near Timber Ridge. The trail was completely covered with groomed hard-pack snow base providing both speed and total control. Though there were a few areas of bare strips at or beyond the far edge of the skate lane, and several small icy patches in the trail none of that interfered with the excellent quality of the skiing and I used one of my best pairs of skaters this morning to celebrate the VASA withstanding Tuesdays 50F temps. Snow depth in the woods averages close to a foot with up to an extra half foot in some areas such as Jackpine Valley and up to a half foot less in the few sun scorched areas.

TART has recommended that skiers not use the trail when it is too soft such as is expected to occur during afternoons with the warm and/or sunny forecast for the next couple of days. Therefore try to plan your ski for early morning when the trail is still firm from the colder overnight temp. If you cant ski during the early morning then you might want to head to the comfort of the Timber Ridge Resort where you can buy a day pass to enjoy their trail system which is in very good condition and being groomed daily.

There are three places to access the actual 11K and 25K loops. The first is the normal access from the Bunker Hill Trailhead but it is in poor condition now with a lot of ice and some bare ground and not recommended. The second is parking out by the Rock but the dirt road getting there is pretty muddy now. The third and currently best option is to go to Timber Ridge where you can access the VASA from their own trails which I did.

See yesterdays trail report for info on tomorrows very important SATURDAY WORK BEE to shovel snow from the woods to shore up the thin areas and protect the trail for next weekends big race. Please considering volunteering for this work bee by calling (231) 938-4400 or at www.VASA.org

Fri, Feb 3: Black Mountain (Onaway)
Skated the Presque Isle side of the trail system this morning. This was the first time I had skied at the system in over a week so I was very surprised to find really great conditions. Most sections have no track set for classic skiing but the skate lane was really flat and smooth. 100% coverage and rock skis were not even considered. For those who have classic skied the race course before and have wondered what it would be like to skate the course, this weekend is your opportunity. The 50 degree weather on Tuesday spared Black Mountain where the high was about 38 degrees. It looked like the middle of normal winter up there this morning!

Thu, Feb 2: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
SATURDAY 8 am WORK BEE - See the following info I've been asked by Woody to post on NSR. This could be a great training opportunity by using the Karate Kid method of Wax On Wax Off training by tossing snow from the woods to cover the thin areas and the widely scattered bare spots. My brief peak at the VASA trail by venturing out one K from Timber Ridge indicates that the VASA main loop is holding up very well so far.

VASA ski race trail work bee for Saturday, 2/4/2012, 8AM

Purpose: Cover bare or thin snow base on Vasa trails due to low snow fall and
melting due to 50 degree temperatures. 10k and 25k loops only. Rileys
loop will be omitted for the present.

1.5 teams of 20 volunteers to meet at 4 different locations. Each team split
into 2 equal numbers and go in opposite directions.
2.Locations:
a.Vasa trail head off Bartlett Rd. Last names A E.
b.Lands End where Vasa trail crosses. John Ammar owns the last lot on the right that can be used for parking. Last names F J.
c.Timber Ridge the start and finish of the Vasa races. Last names K O.
d.Sands Lake Rd. west end that ends at the 25k loop. Last names P T.
e.Bunker Hill and 2-track to Nipple. This location is not known by many people, so meet first at Vasa Trail head, then car pool to start. Last names U Z.
3.Volunteers should be able to ski or snowshoe. If icy conditions present
Ice crampons, such as Ski Trax would be helpful. Individual should bring snow shovels (plastic scoop shovels work well), light weight childrens plastic sleds with rope to tie sled to belt. Sleds can be filled with snow if available snow is remote.
4.Loose snow can be flattened with the shovel to avoid lumpy snow that
will turn into lumps of ice.
5. Team leader to be announced.

Jim Woody Woodburne, Co-Chief of Course

Thu, Feb 2: Hanson Hills (Grayling)
The snow in the woods is still about 6 inches in depth. I skied classic first to check out the trail. Tracks are still good and were lightning fast. Butch was scratching the surface of the blue and green loops. Saw Steve Seager skating and skied a few loops with him. He was having so much fun skating I had to go back to the shop and grab my skate boots. When I returned Brenda Carlson was just getting there. We skied a few loops of the Blue and Green loops. These are the trails Butch Groomed. No Bare Spots Very controllable and nice edging for skating. I got tired of skiing those loops so I decided to see what the rest of the trail was like. To my surprise the Brown, Yellow, and red loop were in excellent shape. The tracks were best on these trails and Highly recommend getting to Hanson and skiing. There was white stuff falling and added a bit of control to the hard skating lane. Fun, Fast and some of the best skiing I have Had all season. No B.S

Watching Brenda take a few tumbles made me Laugh. I Hope she doesn't read this.

The pm report: Kirk and Iskated the flashrace course and found very good trail conditions on all the upper trails. Two bare spots: by the houses
on Tunnel and just over the rise before Tunnel rejoins Vistas, but nothing that can't be plowed and patched up for Sat.& the Keep It in Michigan flashrace. Snow didn't even get wet today. we lost no snow today. Good cloud cover.
Go down a temp or 2 to keep a hard skate wax. Waxless or universal klister for classic.

Now that the temps have cooled we can groom!

As of 1pm the Mackinac Cut and Wild Turkey trails have been successfully Ginzu groomed and doctored (there is still plenty of snow in the woods for doctoring)as has the main trail leading out to Mackinac Cut. On these trails the conditions are very good for skating and good for classic (we plan to set tracks later this afternoon).

The next trail we will renovate will be the Rolling Hills trail. It should be ready by 4.

By Friday afternoon all the trails except the Tall Pines should be ready for skiing. As long as it gets below freezing at night we can survive the 30s during the day.

Today Feb 2: Partly Cloudy. High 36F. Light winds.
Tonight: Cloudy. Low 27F. Light winds.
Friday Feb 3: Partly Cloudy. High 38F. Winds NW at 6 mph.

Ron is out grooming skate lanes with the TiddTech. It is producing a good skatable and fast surface. There are some spots of glare ice here and there. We are leaving the classic tracks as is for now.
Most of the lower system was done today. Use caution if you are heading for the upper trails. We will continue this program until we get some fresh snow.
Thanks to those of you that have made donations. All funds will go back into trail grooming and equipment upgrades.

Both Kirk and myself are surprised at how well our snow coverage has held out. Had to give ski lessons this am but will skate the upper trails this afternoon, so look fro an updated trail report this pm.
Lowe trails are overall good conditions for skating considering the warm weather. We do have some tracks on lower trails. pm report to follow.
Skate - go down a temp or two & stick with a harder wax. Classic- univ. klister or waxless.

Holding the snow. Skated all Presque Isle side trials yesterday afternoon. Temp was 36 and base was still firm and fast. 100% coverage. Trail starting to get cluttered with tree trash. No track set. Morning skates should be the best ticket for the next week or so.

Much better then expected. Packed and tracked yesterday and clean except some leaves. Firm but not icy. Should be good to very good if a little sun and mid 30's. Heads up for descending Weingartzillas.

Wed, Feb 1: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
I cancelled yesterdays planned afternoon ski on the VASA due to concern over damaging the skate lane with the 50F temps. So this morning I arose before dawn in order to take a look and hopefully ski it during early morning while the temps were still hovering around freezing from last night. It worked.

The trail during early morning was firm and fairly fast. Here is a summary of the 25K loop. The first 2K from the trailhead to the split rail fence conditions are poor with 15% or more ice and a handful of pizza-size bare ground patches such as coming down Woodchip Hill. However once joining the loop-proper after the split rail fence conditions improve dramatically: only a handful of small icy patches (some on downhills), a couple of real small ground patches but overall 95% white hardpack snow happy to accept your skate edge and 5% hard-glazed over hardpack snow (in sun exposure areas) refusing to accept your skate edge. That nasty 5% is mainly as you approach Timber Ridge probably due to the heavy volume of two-way traffic on that section, and it can be avoided by hopping into the very fast classic tracks and double poling. Conditions will deteriorate daily with the sunny forecast and warm afternoons.

TART is recommending that skiers not use the VASA groomed trail if it is too soft such as when you sink in 1 inch and leave a rut that might eventually hard-freeze in place and be impossible to erase with future grooming. Afternoon forecasts for the next 3-4 days indicate that it will most likely be too soft but skiers able to hit the trail at the crack of dawn may continue to find a firm and moderately fast base for early morning skiing. If no free time to ski during the early morning you might see if Kristin at Timber Ridge will sell you a day pass to abuse their private trail loop which is my plan for tomorrow afternoon.

Next time I visit TARTs office Im going to ask about designating an All-Weather Portion suitable to sacrifice during warm weather skiing for the greater good of VASA and its numerous addicts needing their daily fix, such as sacrificing the 3K Meadows a/k/a Poop Loop.

Wed, Feb 1: Crystal Mountain (Thompsonville)
Crystal's 40K system is holding up fairly well, with spring-like conditions. Otter Run and Jack's Rabbit are thin and bare in spots; most of our other trails wind through the woods and hills, and are holding the track well. We track-set and groomed last Sunday, but won't be tracksetting again until there's more snow. Hosting the Women's Winter Tour this weekend.

Wed, Feb 1: Deerfield (Kalkaska)
worthy of training. plenty of snow in most areas: damp sugar today. pet skis are fine, although a bit grungy with pine needles and bark. violet flex/shallow red rill/flouromolycarbon redwax. i tried a course chevron over a medium linear with plain hydrocarbon, and it didn't release until we got smokin on the downhill. chris skis had a shallow medium offset over a spaced linear with some molyflourocarbon and violet hydrocarbon and ran well. we anticipate running at least a few more days of good skiing on most of our track - maybe the white pine can relocate over here?

Ski Report Wednesday Feb 1, 2012

Skiing was great yesterday morning and then the south wind brought in the heat. To preserve the good snowpack we have we had to close the skating lanes and just have classic skiing.

Tue, Jan 31: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
What a difference a day makes. 50F in TC today and by 10:30 this a.m. snow in some sections of 10K trail became moisture filled and were slow. In some areas, it was like skiing in mash potatoes. Hopefully, the above normal temps kept skiers off the VASA in the afternoon to prevent deep ruts. I made my 9 hour pilgrimage from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to ski the VASA for 3 days and unless cooler temps and snow prevail I can see this weekend's White Pine Stamped in danger.

The following trails received full groom: Lake, Herringbone, River, Nordic and Maple Ridge. The upper trails have limited classic tracks. The two golf course loops didn't get finished due to warming temps, but are in decent shape. Grooming will resume when colder temps arrive.

Wow...timing is everything sometimes. 2 inches of slippery powder on top of the wknd grooming...excellent coverage, nice and fast with purrrfect control. My skate loop included the hilly untouched loops of innsbruck & lillehammer. Last nights classic ski @ Petoskey State Park was the best of the year there too....so good had to do an extra hills loop with evening ski regulars David & Bret.

Hopefully some cooler temps and fresh snow soon.....

Ski Report Tuesday Jan 31, 2012

What great suprise yesterday. 3 to 4 inches of fresh snow. New Groomer Stu had to pack and snowcomb all the trails all over again in the afternoon after Groomer Rodney groomed them in the morning. 2 CMU professors went skiing following the afternoon groom and reported that "It may be the best skiing of the season!"

At 7am this morning the temperature was 14. Groomer Greg will roll in fresh tracks on all the trails this morning. Even though the forercast shows a warm afternoon the snow pack should be in fine shape because of the cooler nights.

Classic tracks will be freshly set and skating lanes are snowcombed. Great skating conditions and very, very good classic conditions.

Mon, Jan 30: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
With all the motivational fervor of an Amway convention of Double-Diamond-Direct distributors the VASA Race Board treated a couple hundred of their outstanding race volunteers to dinner and an informational meeting to prepare for the VASA with its National Masters Championships were hosting this year. Those still wishing to volunteer can contact Linda at deneendaisy@charter.net

Groomer Paul was there caught the spirit and after dinner he headed straight to the VASA Barn where he fired up the big LMC for its first trip this season around the 11K loop, the Special K Connector, and 25K VASA loop last night but had to skip the hairpin due to concerns about borderline snow depth there not finishing until 2am this morning. He even drove it right up to the back door at Timber Ridge for those starting from the comfort of TR. May have LMC'd the 5K Headwaters also but Im not certain of that.

So as you can imagine the VASA is now crowned with immaculate grooming consisting of a wide and flat skate lane with fresh set tracks for classic. Skating was far faster than either Woody or I would have imagined given temps of only 18F and an inch of fresh lightweight snow on top of the corduroy as of late morning.

What a difference 24 hrs & 4" of new snow makes! Just in time for the VASA groomers to work their magic this morning for the weekend crowd! Great coverage of the ice base except on the more heavily skied downhills. No classic track on the 27k, except out to The Rock, but deep skied-in track on the 10k. Great to see so many others out enjoying the trail, including 420 snowshoers who participated in the Bigfoot Race.

Sat, Jan 28: Loud Creek Ski Trail (Mio)
Big fun, as in big hills, on this US Forest Service foot travel pathway, 30 miles east of Grayling. Fresh 1 inch layer of snow on top of skied-in track made for fast conditions. A little hard gettig grip/kick with waxless skis, but no matter as this little known/visited trail system serves up steep downhills and heringbone required uphills over various loops that add up to 6 to 8 miles(or less if needed). Hills are are bigger/steeper than those at Ogemaw Hills Pathway. If you like adventurous, backcountry-like skiing, you really gotta check this system out!
Volunteer groomers arrived as I was leaving. They said they hadn't groomed yet this year due to the low volume and sporadic supply of snow in this unusual winter. They groom when they can and with what little & old equipment they have. The US Forrest Service doesn't put much emphasis in helping to fund xc skiing. If you go (and you should), please "feed the pipe". The volunteers need all the help they can get.

The fresh snow will give the classic tracks new life and make the classic skiing very good today.

Groomer Rodney will start Ginzu grooming all the trails at dawn. All trails should be ready for skiing by 9:30am. As the snow keeps falling Rpdney will continue grooming.

Classic tracks are set and skating lanes are snowcombed. Very good to great skating conditions and very good classic conditions.

Fri, Jan 27: Ogemaw Hills Pathway (West Branch)
Super fast conditions for this somewhat narrow but well maintained(by vollunteers!)pathway. Surprising how much snow there is in the woods here in the hills just above West Branch. You wouldn't guess it from in town. Must be 9 to 12 inches. Base is quite firm like everywhere else due to rain and warm temps but there was a new 1/2 inch layer of dense granular snow on the track making it feel silky. Great striding with just enuff grip/kick and way fast glide on the numerous downhills (yeah, Ogemaw HILLS). Sunshine, blue-bird sky, spring-like temps, Pure Michigan.
Fund raiser for the Ogemaw Hills Ski Council on Saturday 1/28 at the West Branch Country Club Open to all who love this pathway and the great job the volunteer groomers do with it.

Fri, Jan 27: Lost Lakes (Dubonnet) Pathway (Interlochen)
After morning appts, I headed to Timber Ridge, but the sidewalk was ice after the early morning drizzle & Kristen had closed their trailhead.
So instead, I met my neighbor Janine at Lost Lakes, which she had skied yesterday. But, conditions had changed dramatically from the drizzle. Since Bryce & Paula Dreeszen were just ahead of us, she called & let us know to ski backwards on the first loop, to avoid the rough, icy hardpacked trail on the way to the boat launch & campground. But, it was not much better on the west side of the loop either. At least, on the north side of the Lk Dubonnet dam, the trail was more skiable, esp the 3rd outer loop around the Lost Lakes, with a deep self-groomed track, and some softer snow on the edges, for snowplowing down the hills. On the way back, we skied the seasonal road, but it was icy too from the rain & meltdown this week. If it weren't for the great companionship & warm 36-degree sunshine, we would have turned around & hiked our neighborhood. Wishing for some new snow SOON!!!

Fri, Jan 27: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
Pure Michigan Speed throughout the VASA course this morning - enough to satisfy the inner speed-freak in anyone. Unfortunately I wasnt able to drag myself out to the course until lunchtime so I mainly missed out but Ann H. dragged Bud H out to hit the trails by 8am/8:30am to experience and report upon the ultimate speed available then.

Youll ski every day for a month or two with hopes of experiencing blazingly fast conditions maybe one time and this morning was it. I had a real nice taste of it in the shaded areas which were at max speed but by afternoon it was slowing down in the sunny areas like spring skiing. Unable to address classic skiing conditions today but I assume with the proper wax/klister it too would be very fast.

Groomers Roger and Glen were like speed-farmers early this morning as they Ginzu-plowed yesterdays glazed-over course leaving a nice row of furrows perfect for growing speed crystals which were immediately irrigated by mother natures morning ice fog. The crop of ultimate speed was harvested by any skater able to rise at sun-up and able to handle pure effortless speed. Total control was provided by the furrows of speed crystals which provided excellent steering as your ski edge easily sliced through the furrows to provide purchase for any kind of turn maneuver desired. Feel like youre driving your own Indy car if you can handle it.

Unfortunately by mid-afternoon it was warming up in the sunny areas so be careful to follow the groomers recommendation of staying off the trail and not damaging it if it becomes too soft such as when youre leaving skate ruts 1 deep or more which could later hard freeze-in.

TART is talking about a possible open house with warming fire and refreshments at the trail head tomorrow.

Thu, Jan 26: Black Mountain (Onaway)
Covered all of Presque Isle trails and some of the north Cheboygan Trails. All the trails were very skatable. Base was hard with 100% coverage. However, the base is about 2 to 4 inches which isn't enough to level out the bumps and dips in the trail. Overall, I was very happy with the experience. Hope we get that 6+ inches of snow they are predicting for the weekend!

Thu, Jan 26: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
Nice fast skate conditions continue on the VASA though it was starting to slow down from afternoon warming as I finished the 25K loop. Classic tracks are a little on the shallow side in many areas.

Trail was freshened up by the groomers yesterday but it is starting to compact again today. Not quite to the point of hardpack yet as it still had a thin layer of loose snow on top of the base which itself is still good enough snow to accept a ski edge for all the control you could ask for. A handful of real small ice patches with a grand total of maybe 25' around the entire 25K loop. Walking on the icy parking lot is treacherous in plastic soled boots - be careful if attempting it.
Forecast calls for a half foot of fresh snow starting Friday night.

Started at the Presque Isle parking lot and skated most of the PI trails and some on the Cheboygan side. There was good snow coverage with just a few sticks. The base is pretty firm and the crust is fast however, the few inches of snow on top makes it pretty controllable.

HAD A FINE SKATE SKI TODAY ON NICELY GINZU TENDERIZED TRAILS. GROOMER GREGG WAS STILL WORKING THE TRAILS WHEN I LEFT AND W/EACH PASS THE TRAILS GET BETTER YET. FOR THE MOST PART, THE MOLDED TRACKS ON ALL THE TRAILS SURVIVED THE RAIN AND WARM TEMPS AND ARE VERY SKIABLE AND PRETTY FAST.......AND FUN!!!! THERE ARE A FEW SPARSE AND ICY SPOTS ON ALL TRAILS BUT, ALL IN ALL, THE SYSTEM IS IN GOOD SHAPE CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF RAIN AND WARM TEMPS THAT WE HAD EARLIER THIS WEEK. AS THE TRAILS CONTINUE TO BE "GINZU GROOMED", CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE. ROLLING HILLS, MACKINAC CUT, WILD TURKEY AND THE MAIN CABIN LOOP ARE THE LOOPS THAT ARE IN THE BEST SHAPE......fast, nicely tenderized and FUN!!!!

I Classic skied from the Black Mountain Lodge MDNR parking lot across to the Presque Isle County TBTA section of trails. About 1.5 inches of fresh snow over a nice firm base. The classic tracks were skied in nicely and were firm and fast. Skate skiing should be really good now that the trails have firmed up.

Ski Report Wednesday Jan 25, 2012

With the fresh snow we received yesterday we are able to mix it with the hard pack for very good results.

Groomer Bob just finished Ginzu Grooming the Skating lane on the Rolling Hills trail and reports it to tenderized and nicely snowcombed. The tracks have fresh snow in them and are mostly in good shape. There are some icy spots in the tracks but in those places classic skiers can just get out of the tracks and ski in the skating lane. Same thing with the downhills.

Groomer Greg is tenderizing the Macxkinac Cut, Wild Turkey, Trappers Cabin and Manitou trails this morning. Tracks on these trails are just like the Rolling Hills.

The 4H kids skied the Wild Turkey yesterday even though it had not been groomed and were fine.

Snow doctor Stu will be doctoring the icy trail head.

Tue, Jan 24: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
Trail conditions currently favor classic rather than skating. Mid-afternoon temp was 26F for your kick wax selection.

There is a fresh couple inches of loose snow received overnight but beneath it is refrozen crud. Skating is a little snaggy now due to some deep frozen-in skate ruts as apparently not everyone heard that the groomer team was recommending not using the trail yesterday if it became too soft which it did. Plenty of skiers are out enjoying it today, if skating just use extra caution today and by tomorrow it might be groomed again.

Tue, Jan 24: Michaywe (Gaylord)
Grooming all lower trails today, skate lanes and classic tracks where we can. Still some slushy and thin spots that are easily avoided. Upper trails will be done either later today or first thing in the a.m. We received .5" rain, followed by about 3" snow this morning.

Tue, Jan 24: Black Mountain (Onaway)
Skated from the Black Mountain Lodge, through the Bluffs loop and then to the top of the shelter hill and back. The trails exhibited very good coverage with about 2 inches of fresh new snow after the big thaw yesterday. A couple very thoughtless people had walked the trails yesterday causing some extensive damage. I probably should have stayed off the trails this morning as well since the soft slush snow under the new snow had not set up yet resulting in some deep ruts here and there. Classic skiing would be in order until the trails firm up a bit.

Updated Ski Report Tuesday Jan 24, 2012

It has been snowing for the past hour and it has made the classic skiing pretty good with frsh snow in the tracks. There are some wet spots that turn to slush when groomed so the grooming effort will be delayed until later today or tomorrow at dawn.

Skate skiing is too hard on the trails in the low spots (makes slush) so the trails will only be open for classic skiing today.

   Let it keep snowing!

Sun, Jan 22: Vasa Trail (Traverse City)
An instant replay of yesterday's excellent conditions including sunny sky, freshly groomed trail this morning, and temps in the 20s. All combined to make this weekend the best one yet this season and enjoyed by crowds of skiers as the parking lot early this afternoon was at 95% capacity.
The groomer team has requested that we be careful of the trail if it becomes too soft due to rain or forecast 40F temps tomorrow. If you are leaving tracks one inch deep they suggest it is too soft and will damage the base because it may not be possible to erase such deep (and frozen-in) tracks by the next grooming after it becomes cold again. If its too soft you may want to try one of the many ungroomed DNR trails nearby, a golf course, or consider taking a rest day which your coach will tell you is the most important day of your training week, the one day never to be missed.

Sun, Jan 22: Muncie Lakes Pathway (Traverse City)
Busy parking lot, so great to see so many others enjoying my favorite backcountry trail. The DNR groomed mid-week but the skied-in tracks were still fine. Nancy & John had never skied it, and Tami & Jim has never been to Muncie, so fun to show it off on a mild, sunny, calm Sunday afternoon! Lots of waxless touring skis being used, but who's in a race when you're out taking in the scenery,"Red Oak Alley", around the lakes, up & down lots of hills, standing on the ridge overlooking the Boardman Valley, & down to the Boardman River, too. Ooh-la-la!

Sun, Jan 22: Leelanau Trail (Traverse City)
Thanks to the VASA folks for grooming the Leelanau Rail Trail. Great conditions, nice grooming and decent temps...a perfect Sunday. A great place for a close-to-town outing!

Temp was in the lower 20's. A little cold, but not the teens that was forecast. Snow conditions were great. Nothing you could complain about. Nothing. Packed snow everywhere, no bare spots, absolutely no ice.
I had HF8 on my skate skis from last spring. Maybe 6 was the best for that temp +21F, but I had plenty of glide. Tracks were hard and polished with the Superlight Crowns, I simply went out of the tracks when climbing.

Sun, Jan 22: Big M (Cadillac)
Excellent conditions overall. Catamount was a little soft in a few spots but still was great skiing. There are a few sticks in the trail but they are easy to miss.

Mon, Jan 30: Canada Lakes Pathway (Newberry)
Icy conditions on Friday, but nothing Swix Flexi Klister couldn't cope with. This is a great trail, well maintained by volunteer groomers. Seems like this trail has fallen off people's radar after the demise of the Tahquemanon Invitational ski race. If you are looking for a flatter, less crowded trail to ski before or after the Noque this is a great option.

Mon, Jan 30: Valley Spur (Munising)
10" base with several inches of lake effect during the day. 22F. 25-30" on the level in the woods. A great group of Noque skiers on there way home who stopped and had an enjoyable ski before going home. Snow still hanging on the trees from the recent snow.
Kick wax is easy at 22F and fresh snow.

Sun, Jan 29: Valley Spur (Munising)

The ski trail is in great condition. We've recivied a lot of fresh snow over the last couple of days. Temreatures have dropped and the trails are pretty quick. There is about a 17" base in Copper Harbor. The groomed and track set path is about 10".

Wed, Jan 25: Valley Spur (Munising)
Excellant conditions. 8" to 10" base. The heavy wet snow made for a great skate deck. We received 6" of fluffy white stuff and this capped off the deck really nice. We will be grooming the full system this AM.

Thu, Feb 2: Hiawatha Highlands (Sault Ste. Marie)
Even with the mild temps. as of late we are still in great shape. All trails groomed up this morning and the Mabel lake trail was groomed on Tuesday morning. School groups are out everyday but lots of trails to explore in this winter paradise!!

Mon, Jan 30: Hiawatha Highlands (Sault Ste. Marie)
Snow steady all weekend allowed daily grooming of all trail systems. We are now able to provide perfect ski trail conditions on all 50 km of trails!!
Of special note our Mabel Lake back country trail had significant improvments in the fall to allow better grooming while still keeping it 1.5 meters wide. This trail offers a great single track into snow laden upper Crystal Creek areas.

Fri, Jan 27: Hiawatha Highlands (Sault Ste. Marie)
Despite fluctuations in tempuratures our base is still very solid allowing us to groom daily with very good skate lanes as well nice track setting. Today we have mild conditions with a slight trace of wet snow overnight. Forcast thru the weekend just below zero should allow from some great ski conditions.

Tue, Jan 24: Stokely Creek (Goulais River)
Although Stokely Creek got plenty of rain yesterday, the temperature dropped to minus 6 C overnight and it started snowing at midnight and snowed most of the day. The trails groomed up very well. I skied the Hakon Lien trail but carried snowshoes and also did some work on snowshoes brushing the Perigine Pass snowshoe trail which is gorgeous. The idea is to ski to the hut on either the Hakon Lien or the Peterson and then snowshoe the 4 km between carrying your skis. I didn't have time for this today. The Hakon Lien trail, which was just re-opened after being closed for many years is a gem. About 17 km roundtrip to and from the lodge.
