Stan Dinkel hosted the first Brighton Rec Trail Ski Race last Sunday. And what a glorious day it was! Titled the "B-Rec Back to Back" it was a race plus a party. 1st 5-mi lap was social, at a tour pace, to get to know the terrain. 2nd lap was as fast as you liked. The winner got a Bell's Mini Keg o' Beer! ...Which apres' race was tapped and liberally shared. Brats roast on the grill at the park pavilion capped off a day of sun-tan skiing.
The Brighton Rec trails are a vast network of glacial-shaped "flow trails" with challenging hills galore but yet they aren't dangerous or extreme. Great scenery, too!
All 15 skiers and bikers were challenged for sure. A couple more riders showed up for the party.
All sorts of ski techniques came in very handy at this event, and many optional skills were on display, including crust telemarking down thru the trees. The marathon-skate was also well used on the sides of some gullied sections of trail. Crust snow on both sides of the trail came in handy but the icy mid-section softened in the sun to a controllable degree, if skills were used.
A half-mile uphill trot on a dirt road was part of the game, giving some dismount/remount cyclocross flair and a nice change of pace.
Something for everyone!
