Over 1,200 middle school and high school skiers competed over the 5 kilometer classic and freestyle courses at Giant's Ridge in Minnesota. Of those hundreds, only 19 were from Michigan, yet they managed to ski well and place high in the standings.

Andy Newell and Torin Koos, victimized a year ago by equipment problems, made up for it Sunday as they won the team sprint gold medal at the U.S. Cross Country Championships. Lindsey Dehlin and Lindsay Williams won the women's team sprint in a big upset.

Defending champions Andy Newell (Shaftsbury, VT) and Kikkan Randall (Anchorage, AK) led every heat Saturday en route to winning the men's and women's freestyle sprint titles at the U.S. Cross Country Championships at Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Center.
