The snow is soft. Should you use stiff skis or soft skis? It depends on temperature and moisture content!

It is time for the current, definitive authority on all things Vasa - what it is and what it will be: KING VASA SPEAKS (KVS). Pretentious and grandiose, yes, but oh so informative...

The 20km race course had some of the best grooming ever: Firm deep tracks, firm skate lane with a softer cover, fast but controllable downhills. The course couldn't have been any better.

We are anticipating a large field for the 20K race this weekend since we had to cancel the 50K event. To alleviate the congestion on the course, the committee has decided to stagger the start times for the 20K.

Cross country skiers can gather each week at Nub’s Nob for a new Nordic series created with fun, community, and skill building in mind. Happening every Wednesday night, this soon-to-be midweek staple offers a great reason to get out of the house.

White Pine Stampede shortens 50k to 20K

1/30/2017 - By Jack McKaig

Despite our recent snowfall, the 50K trail was still not good enough in spots to run the full 50. However, the 20K and 10K trails are in excellent shape, so those two races are on as scheduled. All racers registered for the 50K will now be in the 20K.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, NOV 18

Hiawatha Highlands: Two trails with 6 km of groomed skating and classic are open.

Nubs Nob: All 21k of trails are open and will be packed out this morning. Expect early season conditions.

Forbush Corner: Coverage is decent - rock skis for sure, but great to get out.

Kensington Metropark: Fairways are still skiable....no grab

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Forestville Real Grooming Report: Yesterday noon we roll packed the Noque’ to 19k as well as Animoosh, Zing and Boozhoo. Skating yesterday afternoon was very good. Classic was also good but there are no classic tracks set as of yet.

Way Too Long Grooming Report: First, please know, I am wearing my hair shirt for failing to get a report out yesterday. We had technical difficulties. Our carrier pigeon broke a wing and had to walk all the way to spruce street.

On a lighter note, I got new skis yesterday! Now, some of you know that the name
Sondo translates to “user of old sporting equipment”. So, when Wally and Carrie drove by the shop they had to stop the car to see if it was really me walking out with nice new skis. They ask me who I was and what I did with Sondo. After I reminded them I broke my (11 year old) race skis last spring they forgave me for acting out of character.

So, I then sprinted back to my waxing den and then to the trail head. Failing to bring blaze orange, I asked a skier if I could borrow his. I’m sure he had some second thoughts but relented. I expect he was calculating if I were to be hit by a stray bullet we get an improved grooming report writer.

See you out there.

PS: Skiers are reminded to wear orange and to respect hunters. And, hunters are reminded not to shoot skiers with orange hats. No grooming can take place during the day until December 1st to keep the woods quiet during fire arm deer season. For extra credit, what year did we get the blaze orange Noque’ hats?

SAT, NOV 17

Lakes of the North: Arrived at LON a little after one. The place was deserted, yet the 7k trail had been groomed nicely with an inch of new snow on top. Good skating and excellent classic conditions. Used skin skis.

Hanson Hills: Hanson Hills Recreation Authority is a No Hunting park, so it's a safe place to ski on opening weekend of firearm deer hunting season. Although not groomed yet, it was a great ski, breaking trail through the woods & around the alpine ski hill. There was approx 3" heavy snow, along with many red oak leaves.

Bay Meadows GC: Snow squalls all day long resulted in a couple inches of new snow on an already good skied in track. Conditions for some might have been a little slow but it was snowing and it was a winter wonderland. Karen loves it when she has such great control. The trail is so skied in one might think it was rolled. Skiing is awesome and will be even better tomorrow morning when the temperature drops overnight. Would love to get over to Forebush to support those great folks but this is so close to my condo I could walk there. Love this place and all the great people.

Blueberry Ridge: 2-3 more inches of snow on the trails. Trails still pretty uneven and squirrely, but snow is relatively fast and hard packed. Hoping for more this week!

Forbush Corner: First skate of the year. Groomed up pretty nice. Good coverage, thin in the normal places but easily navigated. Looking forward to tomorrow. Rock skis for sure, but no new dings that I know of :)

Kensington Metropark: 10:40am just finished skiing. The snow is wetter and softer, so less good. It is supposed to freeze overnight, so early morning skiing might be OK!

Kensington Metropark: Out on the golf course fairways as I write 8:55am). Not bad! Transformed damp snow. I'm on my classic Super Skis (they can ski over gravel and sticks without care). Tony is skating the good areas and doublepoling between fairways. Rock skis only!

Forbush Corner: Larry’s says it is grooming out well enough to ski. We will be open today. Expect early season conditions.
