LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

TUE, DEC 12

Hudson Mills Metropark: Beautiful snow!

Maybury State Park: 4" fresh dense snow. No grooming but skied in track. Use rock skis. Swix universal blue. A good ski.

Valley Spur: Several inches of snow last night and flurries continue. Dan has rolled and set track on A, B, C, D, Y and W. Very Good classic tracks. We have enough base for some light Ginzu work, so skate lanes will be flattened and Z(Birkie Training Loop) should be open by the weekend.

Hanson Hills: We received another 2 inches of snow last night, Groomers Jason and Tommy G. are packing and rolling all trails again today. We are now up to about 1 1/2 of decent base. We still do not have enough snow to set tracks, but predictions are showing another 1-3inches to be received today!! Lodge and Trail will be open from 9am-4pm today, trail passes are $5.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: We received between 1 and 2 inches of snow yesterday, which improved the conditions of the trails greatly. Groomer Bob snow combed all the trails late yesterday afternoon with good results. With our top trails in mostly good condition, we have upgraded our recommendation for skiing on “rock skis” to skiing on “B skis”. Skating and classic should see full coverage and fair to good conditions most everywhere on the trail network, though not quite enough snow to set classic tracks yet.

Best trails: Mackinaw Cut and Wild Turkey are in the best shape: 85% good, and 15% fair. Manitou has some nice skiing, with 65% good, 30% fair, and one or two thin spots. Rolling Hills is about a 50/50 split between good and fair. Of course, the practice area has a ton of excellent snow. Great for technique training, lessons, and ski demos!

Join us for lunch at the Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe! Today’s specials are the Gourmet Hammy Sammy, with honey glazed sliced spiral ham, swiss cheese, tomato and spicy brown mustard, served on a warm ciabatta bun. We also have creamy ham and potato soup, served with a warm roll and real butter. Fresh baked cookies and hot cocoa make a great dessert!

Things are really starting to look good around here, and more snow is in the forecast later this week!

MON, DEC 11

Vasa Trail: Best of the season for skate skiing. We did use rock skis today but........ maybe race skis could have been used. Just to say it was wonderful today. All trails groomed (no classic yet) and who knows with the winter forecast. Just got to say Lakes of the North has groomed today for the race/tour next Sat. with over 12 inches on the ground. It is winter here in NW Michigan and has been for the last 5 days. Regards, Curt Peterson

Crystal Mountain: A big thank you to devoted groomers Kathloon & Tim & Nordic director Greg for daily rolling & packing the stunning 40k of new & improved XC ski trails at Crystal !! Good coverage overall, firmed up & ideal for working early season technique!! V2 drills are just plain Fun on V2 Alley (Stride Rite & Aspen flats) ! More snow on the way so tomorrow will be even more magical, come on out!

Vasa Trail: What a wonderful start to the ski season and in December no less! Vasa was beautiful, lightly covered but totally covered nonetheless. Gary Kaleita and I went out to the 5 K and it was just lovely. No sticking, just a beautiful trail. Used rock skis but could have gone a step or two up as I encountered no bare spots. No clue what I was waxed with, did not care as just practicing how to ski again and give the muscles a shock to the system.

Vasa Trail: Celebrated Kathy's 60th birthday on our favorite section of the Vasa Pathway, Timber Ridge to Special K, 25k to The Rock to Jack Pine & back to TR (approx 20 km). No classic tracks, but SILKY FAST GLIDE & another 2-4" of snow after TART rolled the trail. Kathy joined me for the Jack Pine hills since I enjoy more challenge between The Rock & TR, and there were lots of yee-haws!!! Just beware of the speed bumps (actually, gravel erosion bars) until there's more snow depth. Afterwards, we enjoyed Centre St Cafe's Swamp soup & I delivered 35 pairs of Nordic Rocks skis to Blair Elementary, so they're ready to get on-snow ASAP. PS - No "rock" skis were necessary since the trail could have been race ready!

Hanson Hills: Sill early season conditions. all trails are open, rock skis are recommended as we only have 1/2 inch of base in most areas. No tracks are set at this time. Lodge and Trails Open 9am-4pm today.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It was a fun day of early season skiing yesterday, especially with steady snowfall throughout the day! Many folks had enjoyed demoing skis on the practice area, which still has excellent conditions after our snowmaking efforts last week. Conditions across the street are improving with each snowfall. After yesterday, we are very close to being able to groom the trail network across the street for good skis (classic and skate). We still need just a couple more inches of snow, and with any luck we will get it today as forecasted.

The best trails are the Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, and Rolling Hills trails, which are 30% good, 60% fair, and 10% marginal. At this time until we get more snow, classic skiing only is permitted on the trails. Rock skis are available for rent at a nominal cost.

The Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe is up and running! Today’s lunch specials are the Gourmet Hammy Sammy, with honey glazed thick sliced spiral ham, swiss cheese, tomato and spicy brown mustard, served on a warm ciabatta bun. We also have creamy ham and potato soup, served with a warm roll and real butter! And don’t forget to try a delicious, home-baked banana walnut muffin.

Keep on thinking snow – and stay tuned to tomorrow’s ski report, where we’ll report any snowfall we receive today and tonight.
