LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, DEC 17

Boyne Mountain: 25k of trails are open and groomed. Our Vistas trail is looking particularly spectacular. We also have a snowshoe trail and a fat tire bike trail open for your enjoyment. Come on down and see us!

Maybury State Park: The park is open for skiing, hiking and snow shoeing, however, our paved trails are not groomed due to equipment failure. As soon as the transmission is repaired on our gator ( it's still stuck on the trail in the middle of the park), we'll be back in business. We apologize for the poor ski conditions and hope that users will still enjoy the park! MSP Staff

Hanson Hills: Red and M-93 Hills groomed for skating. Green, Blue, Brown, and Yellow snow combed with set tracks. Wilderness Trail is tracked!! Lodge and Trails Open 9am-5pm today!!

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The skiing was fantastic yesterday. Classic tracks and skating lanes still are in great condition on the Manitou, Rolling Hills, Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, and Trappers Cabin trails. Tall Pines is still in fair to good condition, and Adventure is ungroomed and open for “back country” skiing and snowshoeing. It is so wonderful to see so many skiers taking advantage of these great early season conditions!

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe is Classic Chili and Bosco Sticks! Our classic spicy chili is a longstanding wintertime favorite, and when you put it with 3 cheese-filled breadsticks, you don’t even care if you earned it!

The Christmas sale is in full swing! Sweaters, gloves, hats, socks, snowshoes, skis - and it's all on sale! Enjoy this beautiful day on the snow.

SAT, DEC 16

Valley Spur: A significant improvement in our trails over the last few days. Everyday this past week we had some lake effect snow. Our newly added 8' drag has flattened skate lanes and cold temps have firmed everything up. Our last trail to open was packed today, Worel's Woods. That should be ready to go in a day or two. Classic tracks were very good today.

Pigeon Creek: First time out on snow this year and I welcomed the chance to shake the cobwebs off and get the ski legs used to the snow again. The conditions were also much better than I expected for this old school strider. While the base is still thin, there was more than enough there with no issues with dirty snow or sticks and fairly fast. For the first time out, I elected to take the easy route and use waxless, but it gave me a chance to maximize my on snow time. With the warmup happening early next week, best to get out there asap while the snow is still plentiful. I know I will be back tomorrow.

Vasa Trail: A perfect day to do a LSD (Long Slow Distance) 27km ski in classic tracks, up & down the VASA hills, Headwaters, 25k loop & Jack Pine! What a pleasure to glide & double-pole in the tracks! The trail was in race-ready condition, thanks to Glen & Jim D, TART groomers.

Pigeon Creek: Excellent skating conditions this morning, track was packed and groomed.. Much better than expected..

Unlisted trail: Avalanche Preserve, Boyne City. They are grooming both the hiking trails and the mountain bike trails here. The mountain bike trails are groomed pretty narrow with fat tire bikes in mind but they are a hoot to ski. Highly recommended if you like narrow, curvy, rolling trails with a few good hills. What a great addition to our groomed ski options in Boyne City.

Hill Nature Preserve, The: Freshly groomed this morning. Perfect conditions on this sunny Saturday. Come enjoy some great classic skiing just outside of Boyne City

Milham Park Golf Course: Grooming intern Violet and I groomed Milham this morning. Skiers should find a wide skating lane and a thin classic track. It has warmed up beyond the forecast but hopefully the trail will hold up until it refreezes tonight. Conditions should be ok sunday am before the next big warm up starting tomorrow afternoon.

Boyne Mountain: Some light snow after yesterday's grooming added to the great base we already had built up. 25 km of trails are freshly tracked and combed, ready for skiing.

Kensington Metropark: Dropped by Kensington after my ski to see what kind of shape it was in. Although the man at the desk said it had been groomed for skate and classic that morning, one look down the trail said it had not been groomed today. You could see a narrow skate lane under new snow, and the classic tracks were skied in over snowed-over grooming. Lot's of skiers having fun. Would be nice if the staff working the ski center were better informed.

Vasa Trail: Early birds this morning enjoyed freshly groomed trails (skate & classic), crisp temps, and generally glorious mid-winter conditions a week before Christmas. Excellent run on the 10K amid trees still draped in some of the 23 inches of snow that has fallen the past 10 days in Traverse City.

Huron Meadows Metropark: It's noon and after a great ski, I'm reviewing my review. The skating and classic skiing is awesome on the golf course and Buck's Run! The golf course is now groomed with a firm, deep double track and and wide skate lane. The skate lane is mostly firm with a nice soft topping, making control easy. Doesn't get much better than this!

Looks like the trail around the lake is partially double tracked, partially untracked. I don't know what south of Hammel Road is like.

Get out and ski!

Maybury State Park: Very poor. Their equipment broke, so nothing is groomed. Most of the skied in stuff is in really poor shape also due to reasons too long to bother writing down. Some of the seldom used trails in the woods are skied in and ok.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Light fresh powder on top of yesterday's grooming. Double track and skate lane on the golf course. The loop around the lake looks skied in but not groomed. beautiful day!

Hanson Hills: Could someone direct the snow towards Grayling?? We received another inch of snowfall yesterday. Groomers Tommy G, and Jason have All the main trails groomed perfect for skating. We have old tracks on Green/Blue and Easy Return, Tommy G. is out this morning Setting additional Tracks on Yellow, Brown and Wilderness!! No tracks on Red or M-93 (not enough snow). Lodge and Trails Open 9am-5pm today. $12 Trail Passes

Forbush Corner: Copious amounts of powertilling were required to process the 8 - 10" that fell yesterday afternoon and evening.  The entire East Trail System (~15 km) has been groomed for skating and tracked for classic skiing.  Classic skiing should be wonderful today.  We are working on the West Trail System and hope to have it groomed and ready to go tomorrow.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: We received another 2 inches of snow throughout yesterday morning, which was enough to enable Groomer Mike to snowcomb. It also filled in the classic tracks perfectly, and has given us great conditions for classic and skating on the premier trails: Rolling Hills, Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, and Manitou. Tall Pines is still in fair to good condition, and Adventure is ungroomed and open for “back country” skiing and snowshoeing. As long time skier John Buiteweg said yesterday, “you went from rock skiing to perfect skiing in one week!”

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe is the Rocky Mountain Chipotle Panini! Your choice of oven roasted turkey or homemade hummus and double provolone cheese, plus bell peppers, banana peppers, black olives, spinach, onion, tomato, and chipotle mayo on grilled Stone House 7-grain bread. Served with Great Lakes Potato Chips and a dill pickle! Classic and Veggie Chili are available, and are served with a multigrain roll and butter.

Come one, come all to visit the jolliest outdoorsman in the North Woods, Trapper Santa! Today from Noon until 3:00pm, children of all ages (including adults) are invited to ski or snowshoe to Trapper’s Cabin, where this rustic Santa will be tending the bonfire, serving up free hot cocoa and s’mores, and telling wintery tales. Bring your own skis or snowshoes, or rent for a nominal cost.

The Christmas sale is in full swing! Sweaters, gloves, hats, socks, snowshoes, skis, you name it – we have it and it’s on sale. It’s a great weekend to be skiing!

Crystal Mountain: Heading out to groom the trails again today. Groomed and trackset everything yesterday but it snowed while I was doing it. Hopefully I don't get stuck or roll it today-done that twice already. Reminder for us classic skiers while you are over this way skiing our trails hop on over to the Betsie pathway. We roll /pack the upper trail system. It's not trackset but nice and firm. I think it's about a 6 mile loop if you do the outer loop. Ski ya later and don't forget to buy a pass-it costs a lot of money and time to groom. Thanks, Kathloon
