Using what was left of the artificial snow made back in December, Bob, Stu and crew created a twisty, hilly, 200-yard loop course on the ski park, which was just long enough to get the skiers out of breath and make shooting the guns an exciting challenge.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, DEC 10

Vasa Trail: What a great day, skiing with my hero Dick Fultz and of course the lovely and talented Karen. We skied in almost perfect conditions and then ran into Karen Kirt and Amy Powell. Three beautiful women and a great guy. I was in Vasa heaven. Can't wait until what tomorrow will bring.

Muncie Lakes Pathway: The skied-in tracks were good for the 4 who classic skied Muncie today during the Grand Traverse Hiking Club's Annul Holiday Celebration, but no one skied past post #8 to the river. Since most were hiking, I did too, so I could socialize with friends. My group hiked to the lakes & post #8, then took the crossover for the return since it was slow hiking in the snow & we were meeting at Peegeo's for dinner at 4PM. I didn't notice any dirt or rocks on the trail, which was 4-6" deep in the woods. As soon as the trail receives more snow & the 3 downed trees can be sawed, the first volunteer groom will take place. If you'd like to contribute, there are donation envelopes at the trailhead kiosk.

Wildwood Pathway: Conditions were excellent today! It looked like there is over a foot of fluffy powder on the trail - a whole lot more snow than in the Traverse City area. There were skier-groomed tracks on the 4.1 mile loop from trail marker #1 to 2 to 5 to 6 to 9 and back. Nobody has yet tracked the other sections. There are some downed trees that will be cleared eventually, but for the time being, they are easy to step over. Our waxless skis worked well. Cross country skiing the way it used to be!

Shanty Creek - Schuss Mtn: Most of the trails have been rolled. Today Pine Cone and Winterbrook were groomed and trackset with the Tid Tech. Skiing is good. However downhill skiing is closing till next Friday when they open for the season. It is not clear if the trails will be groomed again till then.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: We had a great turnout at the Jordyn Ross skate and classic ski clinics yesterday, which took place in great snow conditions on the XC Ski HQ practice area and practice hill. Groomer Bob snow combed all the trails except the Adventure and Tall Pines trails, with marginal to good results. Quite a few skiers used rock skis on these trails yesterday, with better than expected conditions! The best trails are the Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, and Rolling Hills trails, which are 30% good, 60% fair, and 10% marginal. At this time until we get more snow, classic skiing only is permitted on the trails. Rock skis are available for rent at a nominal cost.

We only need 3-4 more inches of snow until we feel confident in having good to great skiing on most of the trails. It has been snowing all morning here in Higgins Lake, and we are expecting to receive more snow throughout the week. We will also be continuing our snow making efforts throughout the week as well, as temps look to stay quite cold. Stay tuned as the weather plays out and the snow falls!

The Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe is up and running! Today’s lunch specials are the Gourmet Hammy Sammy, with honey glazed thick sliced spiral ham, swiss cheese, tomato and spicy brown mustard, served on a warm ciabatta bun. We also have creamy ham and potato soup, served with a warm roll and real butter! Top it off with a delicious chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookie – fresh baked!

We are open for cross country ski and boot demos! Try the demo center favorite Rossignol Delta skate skis, or some longtime favorite Fischer Superlite Crowns. Need some new classic boots! The new (for us) Salomon Equipe 9 classics have already developed a strong following for their comfort and performance. Free demos all day, everyday! And don’t miss some great Christmas shopping – lots of awesome sweaters, hats, socks, and more on sale!

Let it snow!

Hanson Hills: Trails are open, we have a 1/2 inch base in most areas, marginal in other areas, Trails were packed with tidd tech on Friday. NO Set Track. Lodge and Trails are open 9am-5pm today. $5 Trail passes.

Forbush Corner: We are so glad to have the snow back !!!  Larry and Todd finished clearing dead-fall and groomed the entire East Trail System yesterday (~15 km).  Coverage is thin, but very ski-able.  No classic tracks yet, only corduroy.  Rock skis recommended.

We picked up a dusting overnight and it is currently snowing with a couple of inches in the forecast for today.  We will be open from 9 to 5 today and tomorrow from 10 to sometime in the afternoon.
