Valaas and Strabel Win Capitol Square Classic Sprint

Tue, Jan  16, 2007 - By CXC Skiing

With 75 meters to go Eric Strabel of APU jumped from 3rd place to pass Kevin Hochtl of Rossignol and narrowly edge Colin Rodgers of FsX who led nearly the entire race to the line.  Bryan Cook of CXC finished 4th.  Strabel’s win today will give him the leader’s jersey in the Super Tour Sprint and Central Grand Prix competition.

Laura Valaas of CXC continued her dominance in Super Tour sprints leading from start to finish ahead of Caitlin Compton of CXC, Nicole Deyong of FsX and Karin Camenisch of Rossignol.

A specially constructed bridge served as the crux of the course and the only hill.  It was steep enough that it required haring boning.  The fast course and tight turns led many skiers to opt for skating skis.  Today was the final race of the 2007 Capitol Square Sprints.

“Laura looked like she had a commanding lead all day.  Caitlin did an excellent job skiing a smart and tactical race, staying out of harms way to take second.”-CXC Coach Bryan Fish

“I felt good out there today.  I skied relaxed and was happy to get the win at the line.  I had debated coming to race in Madison, since it was right after Nationals, but I am glad I came.  The organizers and volunteers put on a great event. Colin was very tough today, leading the entire finale and Kevin was also a super competitor by protecting his 2nd place position for so long”

Strabel showed his appreciation for the volunteers who made the 2007 Capitol Square Sprints happen by buying pizza them all pizza.
