Soo Finnish Nordic seeks coach

Wed, Sep  30, 2009 - By Jim Mihell

Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club, located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario is seeking candidates to fill a year-round coaching position. The incumbent will be responsible for serving as the club’s racing program head coach, and will develop and implement a coaching model appropriate to a full service Nordic ski club. In addition, the incumbent will provide mentorship, direction and support to the club’s base of volunteer coaches. On an annualized basis, this position represents a half-full-time commitment (i.e., approximately 1000 hours/yr), with the bulk of the commitment occurring during the winter months.

The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, and ability to work independently.
  • Level 3 NCCP qualification or equivalent in cross country skiing, and/or demonstrated success as a cross-country ski coach with a willingness to pursue qualification to that standard
  • Experience coaching or competing in elite level competitive events (Ontario Cup races and beyond)
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with Cross Country Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Guide
  • Well developed written and oral communication skills; ability to interact and relate to youth and Masters racers, parents, race team personnel, officials and other coaches
  • Proficiency with word processing and data processing software (e.g. MSWord, MSExcel)

Starting base salary is $28,000 per year with benefits amounting to 7% base salary. As this position is to some extent self-funding, the Club will entertain increases to this base salary as growth in programming that is attributable to the incumbent’s success permits. As this is a new position, we feel that there are many opportunities to build and grow towards that end.

Interested applicants should submit a C.V. to Jim Mihell, Vice President Programs, Soo Finnish Nordic Ski Club at bmihell@shaw.ca prior to October 26, 2009.
