The final freestyle XC ski sprints for the season took place at Hickory Hills Tuesday night, with 21 high school team members from Traverse City and St Francis participating in the 3km race, and 11 adults. Glen Lake's Cassidy Edwards (7:37), the winner of the Vasa 12km race, was only nine seconds off Steve Kuhl's time of 7:28, the winner of the men's sprint race. A close finish between second and third places in the men's race took place between Bill Brundage (8:21) and Joe Esper (8:23). West's Chris Scott, the winner of the Michigan High School XC Ski Championship in Houghton last weekend, won the boy's sprint race in 7:45. Rapid City's Morgan Weir took second in the boys race in 8:24, and East Jr High's Jesse Smith placed third in 8:55. The top 2 winning girls at the High School Championship reversed positions in the sprints, with Central's Anna Coulter placing second in 8:29 and Julia Coulter third in 8:47. The final classic sprints will take place next Tuesday at Hickory Hills.
