Thu, Jan 21: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)

Staff will again be hauling snow on the bucks run trail today. Trail will be ready by 2pm. Golf course has set up and is in fair to good shape for skating. Skiied in classic on Southside but very thin under the trees.

Bucks Run is great! Classic today and tracks are good. Skating looked really nice.

Great conditions on the trail system at the Meadows. New snow over a nice firm base in most all sections. Work on the Contractors loop has provided best ever conditions. Always impressed that each season the Meadows staff works to improve the trail experience with small reroutes around low snow areas where they can and looking for opportunities to provide interesting terrain (hills) to ski on. Thank you.

Staff will be adding snow to Bucks Run today, focusing on the straightaway areas and possibly the hills. Expect maintenance to be completed around 2pm. We will also be grooming a skate lane around the golf course trails as well as Cedar Trace and Sunset park area. Still not quite enough snow to set a decent classic track.

N. Pine Loop and contractors loop were both very skiable last evening. The inch or so on top of the old crust made it very nice skiing. If we get more people skating on the contractors loop it will be skied in quite well. I would recommend B skis just in case but we really had no problem other than a little bit of gravel on the decent down toward the lake. Happy skiing. P

Buck's Run: Fast and firm late afternoon. Skaters were flying. Tracks were fast, just and a bit worn on turns. Clean snow, with no ground showing through. Total coverage on the golf course and other open areas.

Was out before dawn this morning. Always interesting to skate in the dark when you're not quite awake. Got a couple laps in on Buck's Run before Tony joined me. The trail was hard and fast. The groomer came out about 7:45 and was make slow and study progress around the trail with the powertiller. The freshly groomed trail was nice. I had to leave before the groomer was finished. Also skied with a couple coyotes on the trail!.

Noticed lots of skied in classic tracks on the golf course. May bring my touring nowadays skis out later this week!

Posting this to also agree with Gary Seven, but more importantly to say how great it was to see him out there. I haven’t seen Gary on skis in years, and always really enjoy skiing with him. He should have been the one doing the most interesting man in the world beer commercials!

Conditions at 2 pm on Bucks Run were a bit too icy for me (newbie). So I decided to put on my classic Evo skies and try Coyote’s trail. Although there were no tracks, there were a few ones made by prior skiers that I could enjoy. The 1/2 inch to an inch of fresh snow that felt last night made it an enjoyable session. There are areas where the snow was soft and powdery and I wonder if the deck is ready to be groomed for skate and for tracks to be set. I counted 5-7 thin spots where grass can be seen but easily avoidable. Coyote saved the day for me!

Largely agree with Gary Seven. I did a classic technique clinic (a benefit of belonging to Team NordicSkiRacer! https://www.skisignup.com/teamnsr) starting at 9:00am. Tracks were OK at that time, but got progressively icier / blown-out as we did the clinic and as more skiers skied in the tracks. The straightaways were OK, but the trail needs some softer snow to set a good track. Still, it was better than driving up north today!

Not so great today. Classic track mostly wiped out and icy. Skate lane very very firm. Coverage was excellent so no worries there. Nice to have skiing, but relative to other days it was fair.

Sun, Jan 17: Stinchfield Woods  (Pinckney)

Stinchfield Woods was absolutely fantastic with the 3/4 inch of pow over the top of the solid base there. A solid 7 miles skied with 700 feet elevation gain. Hammer fest up the 1/2mile long climbs! Great kick and glide everywhere else. Easier to control the skis today compared to yesterday.

Bucks Run has been tilled and groomed for skate and classic. We probably still need a bit more help from Mother Nature to do anything with the other trails. We’ll try to groom a section of the loop behind the maintenance shop for skate skiing. Ski Center is open for rental equipment, enjoy the day!

Bucks Run is in fantastic shape this morning and it looked like there was about 8-10 inches of man made base. The skate lane is firm and fast with a little bit of fresh snow making it controllable and the classic tracks are getting skied in. There also seems to be more natural snow right now at Huron Meadows than anywhere else....enjoy!

Dense speedy snow with mostly good coverage. There are some thin and bare spots mixed in you have to keep an eye out for. Most of the time there is a glaze of ice over the pine needles and you just glide right over it, other times you have to ski-walk. (You can ski for miles in between these spots)
Definetly recommend BC skis with metal edges right now, I’m wearing knee and hip pads too. Road is not plowed which is great for skiing top to bottom on. Overal, I’ve skied it in more difficult and certainly much better conditions.
Enjoy,

Stan

I’m a newbie to skate skiing. Went at 3 pm. A bit too icy for me.

Good skating today. Sugary snow on top of icy base. Very fast.
Classic tracks were shallow. Icy in some areas.

Fri, Jan 15: Huron Meadows Metropark (Brighton)

Classic skied today. Soft with wet snow and warm temps. But still get some glide on skins.
Skate lane has two inches of wet snow. Looked really slow.
A lot of classic skiers out enjoying the day!
