Last Saturday’s 15k Time Trial at Stokely Creek near Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, took place under near perfect conditions: hard tracks, sunny skies, and temperatures around 15F at the 10 am start. Race marshall Peter Grey and his crew of volunteers had fussed over the course and were ready, as ready as the racers. A new start zone directly in front of the lodge let viewers see racers climb the short hill and cheer them on.
The climb up Peterson Trail (230 ft elevation difference) was followed by a few km of more or less gently rolling terrain before racers faced the second long ascent (300 ft; 10% average) to the top of Jackrabbit. A very fast descent on hardpack, a short section of moderate terrain, and then a final fast downhill on Homerun.

Beer, chili, brats, and cake at the warm-up cabin – what else could one want except one of the numerous awards: For the overall winners, male and female, skate and classic: One nights lodging, meals, and trail passes.
The number of participants was smaller this year, presumably due to the rescheduled Michigan Cup races at Hanson Hills. Plan on coming next year – its guaranteed to be a great party!
