Outside Magazine named six cross country ski destinations, including Michigan's own Cross Country Ski Headquarters, as "America's Nordic Skiing Meccas". The Headquarters was noted as a great place for beginners to start because of the easier terrain and four on-staff PSIA instructors. The list of "Nordic Skiing Meccas" include:
- Cross-Country Ski Headquarters (Roscommon, Michigan)
- The Birkie Trail (Hayward to Cable, Wisconsin)
- City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
- Soldier Hollow (Wasatch Mountain State Park, Utah)
- Craftsbury Outdoor Center (Craftsbury Common, Vermont)
- Rendezvous Ski Trails (West Yellowstone, Montana)
