Snow Update! UPDATE Friday 1/1: The second snow gun is making a huge difference so we definitely have a race! We did not get as much natural snow as expected (but we can still hope) so we'll be racing laps on the kilometer-and-a-half loop. To reduce congestion, we are dividing the race into multiple races starting a different times: 9:00am - Kids 5-11 race10:30am - 5k Men's race (3 laps) 11:30am - 5k Women's race (3 laps) 12:30am - 10k Men's race (6 laps) 1:30pm - 10k Women's race (6 laps) Men's 10k - if you are still on the course at 1:30pm (the women's start), you may continue to race. Just be aware that faster skiers have the right-of-way. You'll notice we've dropped the distance in the long race from 15k to 10k. We figure it will be hard enough to keep track of 6 laps. Nine laps is just to hard to track when you're in oxygen debt! We'll figure out the awards ceremony - we might do the 5k awards while the 10k skiers are racing - we'll post a schedule in the morning. UPDATE Thursday 1/12: The weather is looking up! Dropping temperatures, 2-5 inches of natural snow starting tonight, plus two snow guns. See the forecast. UPDATE Tuesday 1/10. We have a SECOND snow-making gun! The Peabody Ice Climbing Club is renting us their snow gun - we'll have a second snow gunning running Wednesday night! We've been making snow since January 2 and have quite a bit of snow piled up for the Frosty Freestyle and Krazy Klassic (photo below shows one area).
The Frosty Freestyle and the Krazy Klassic are still on. We have enough man-made snow from Huron Meadows new snow gun to cover a mile loop even if Mother Nature fails to deliver more snow and even with the forecasted warm temperatures the first part of this week. If we run on the mile loop, we'll probably reduce the 15k distance to 10k (6 laps). We'd also finish the 5k race before starting the longer race to reduce skier congestion. Similarly, we'd run the Krazy Klassic on the man-made snow as well. The Krazy Klassic was already planned to be a multi-lap race with interval starts. We only need 5 inches of snow to open up all of the normal Frosty course: the trail system is manicured to need minimal snow. The Races 15k/5k Freestyle/Classic Frosty Freestyle Saturday's Frosty Freestyle will have skate and classic divisions for both the 5K and the 15K race. Choose your technique and distance! Want a challenge? Do the 15K! A little unsure or want a shorter distance? Do the 5K! The Frosty is a FABULOUS beginner's race! This year we also offer shorter distance races for kids 11 and younger. The Frosty Freestyle entry fee includes lunch, chip timing, age group awards, goodie bags, feeds on the race course, door prizes, and a T-shirt (for those 12 and older) or a medal (kids 11 and under). This is the BIG RACE! Food and Frosty Beverages The race features mass start waves: Kids 11 and under start at 9:00am, then at 10:30am the 15k Men go, floowed by the 15k Women, 5k Men, and 5k Women every 3 minutes. Frosty Freestyle Registration
We will also have pre-registration the evening before the race at REI Ann Arbor from 6pm-8pm. Cash or check only at REI and on race day - we don't have a way to do credit cards. Awards
The 12k Krazy Klassic Sunday's Krazy Klassic has one distance: 12k, classic skiing only. The Krazy Klassic fee includes age group awards only. The Krazy Klassic is an interval start race: two skiers will start every 15 seconds, and do three laps around a 4k loop. Krazy Klassic Registration Like the Frosty, age-class awards go three-deep for both men and women. Kids: Learn to Ski and Race! Want your child to learn how to cross-country ski and then participate in an actual race? SELCRA (Southeastern Livingston County Recreation Authority) is joining the 3rd Annual REI Frosty Freestyle Cross-Country Ski at Huron Meadows for its 1st Annual SELCRA Kids Frosty Race for ages 5 - 11 year olds! In the three weeks leading up to the race, three classes will be held to teach the children the basic techniques of cross-country skiing. These techniques include diagonal stride, turning, stopping, how to fall and get up, and even skating technique. After the three classes, they get to put these new skills to the test in our Kids Frosty Race. Ski equipment rentals are included. Spots are limited so sign up today. See you at the race! Cost ($55 before Dec 20, $65 beginning Dec 20) includes the three classes, ski rental, and the race on January 14, 2012. Classes be held indoors at Huron Meadows if it's not frosty enough outside.
