While many areas in the Midwest were lacking snow, Brockway Mountain had a good snow base for the Challenge event. Race participants enjoyed excellent, fast skiing conditions, thanks to a fresh covering of lake-effect snow and a piston bully groomed course. Skiers from throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Lower Peninsula, and Wisconsin participated in the 15 kilometer race across the top of Brockway Mountain and down an exhilarating, steep descent to the finish line in the town of Copper Harbor. The Brockway Mountain Challenge included both classic and freestyle Nordic events. Trophies were awarded to the overall fastest male and female racers. For the men, the fastest racer was Ken Wicgren of Mohawk, Michigan, who completed the course in 44:07 minutes. Kathleen McGrath of Watersmeet, Michigan completed the race in 61:27 minutes to take the trophy for fastest female racer. In both the classic and freestyle events, top finishers by age class received ribbons and engraved cobalt glass goblets as prizes. Race participants and fans were also able to register for a special prize drawing for a trip to Las Vegas, courtesy of WCUP-FM Eagle Country Radio. The post-race awards ceremony was held at the Copper Harbor Community Center, and was presided over by Don Kauppi of Mariner North, a member of the Brockway Mountain Challenge 2002 organizing committee. |
