Hello Friends of TART,
Leelanau County is home to 2 cycling events September 16 and 17! Watch the Tour de Leelanau race and ride the Leelanau Harvest Tour. Details below.
WATCH IT: The 2nd annual Tour de Leelanau bicycle race in beautiful Leelanau County is set for September 16. The Tour de Leelanau is in the tradition of a classic European road race and will take qualified racers through one of the most scenic rural areas in Michigan. The Tour de Leelanau offers many locations for spectators to cheer on the racers.
The men's course will take racers on a 104-mile trek; the women's course is 66 miles and will take off just steps from the pristine shores of Lake Michigan. Both men's and women's point-to-point open road courses include varying twists, climbs, and descents traveling through several villages before finishing uphill at Leelanau Sands Casino in Peshawbestown.
The Tour de Leelanau has quickly established itself as Michigan's premier cycling event and is sanctioned by USA Cycling, held under permit by the United States Cycling Federation. Entries are limited to qualified teams only. All riders must have a valid USPRO or USCF 1, 2, or 3 racing license. Team registration forms are available by calling (231) 922-5926 or by visiting www.tourdeleelanau.com.
RIDE IT: The Cherry Capital Cycling Club is hosting the 2006 Leelanau Harvest Tour on Sunday, September 17, an annual bicycle road ride through picturesque Leelanau County. The Leelanau Harvest Tour is a benefit for Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, a local trail, bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization. The Leelanau Harvest Tour is not a race; it's a noncompetitive tour offering routes of 25, 45, 67 and 100 miles. The tour is known for its unique food stops every 20 to 30 miles. Each stop is on a lakefront park with a menu that includes specialties donated by area merchants and restaurants.
The Leelanau Harvest Tour starts and ends at Glen Lake High School. Cyclists may register now for $25 or for $30 (Sept. 9 - Sept. 17). Families may register now for $50 or $60 (Sept. 9 - Sept. 17). Applications may be obtained from the TART Trails office by calling (231) 941-4300 or can be downloaded from the Cherry Capital Cycling Club web site, www.cherry-capital.com/cccc, click on "Tours" tab, then on "LHT."
